  SPRING 2011

Springing into Action – Safely

With daffodils and warmer weather comes the urge to give your house a good scrub. For many homeowners, that means hauling out a pressure washer and climbing a ladder. Before you tackle your gutters, roof and siding, though, keep these tips in mind:

  • Position your ladder properly: one foot out for every four feet up. And move it along as you work – never lean too far to either side.
  • Beware the combination of water and electricity. Make sure your power washer, electrical cord and electrical unit are all in good working order.
  • Don’t leave too much slack in your cord, or else you may get tangled in it or trip.
  • Never aim your pressure washer at anyone. At 1300 to 3000 PSI (pounds per square inch), that beam of water can cause cuts or serious injury. You are unlikely to need a pressure washer rated above 3500 PSI for home or commercial projects.
  • Handle cleaning chemicals with care. Read the label, and avoid damaging your skin, eyes, nose or lungs.

Then again, you may want to take a gentler approach to cleaning. Local home improvement pundit Shell Busey recommends using a low-pressure garden sprayer, mild cleanser (which he conveniently sells), and old-fashioned elbow grease with a patio broom. And who does Busey recommend for security monitoring? Radius Security, of course.

Enriching Your Life with Free Play

Piano, ballet, hockey, theatre, gymnastics, painting… enrichment opportunities for kids seem endless. And who doesn’t want an enriched life? However, many child development experts agree that the best “enrichment” may be to set your child free to play (try Googling “free play benefits”). Running around in a park, building sand castles, and taking imaginary voyages on the sofa are critical to a child’s physical, emotional, social and intellectual development. And besides, it’s free.

Announcing a New Safety Blog

Did you know that in February, the Vancouver Police issued public warnings about a child sex offender and purse snatchers? The RCMP also drew attention to a couple of telephone scams and Health Canada recalled an Ikea crib and some baby video monitors last month.

At Radius, “Your Safety is Our Vision,” so we’ve launched a new safety blog on our web site. Every week, we scan the headlines to offer you timely advice on safety and security issues affecting the Lower Mainland. Check out our blog and share your thoughts on these issues today.

And, if you haven’t done so already, sign up to receive Radius updates on Facebook and Twitter.

  3. Keep your passwords, personal identification numbers (PINs), personal verification questions and credit card/account numbers confidential. Don’t tell anyone.
  4. Always log off when you’re done. Preferably, close your browser and empty your cache.
