Choices and Consequences

Every choice has a consequence. That’s a message we all need to hear. And the John Howard Society’s Choices and Consequences program makes sure younger people hear it.

Named after an 18th Century British philanthropist who devoted his life to prison reform, the society works with individuals, families and partners like Radius Security on the root causes and consequences of crime. The Choices and Consequences program connects speakers with schools, youth groups and community centres throughout the Lower Mainland.

Volunteers share candidly about their personal choices, experiences with the criminal justice system, rehabilitation and reconciliation. They don’t try to glamourize crime or “scare kids straight.” Instead, their honest—often emotional--narratives highlight the realities of the criminal justice system. They talk about what led up to their prison sentence and what made them turn their lives around.

These real-life stories challenge pre-conceived ideas about what it means to be a “criminal.” The speakers engage youths of all ages and backgrounds, while emphasizing that crime is a community concern. The program offers at-risk youth alternative choices to criminal activity.

At Radius Security, we are proud to be a corporate sponsor for Choices and Consequences in Metro Vancouver. So much of our work focusses on apprehending criminals. This program offers a complementary preventive strategy. By helping youths make better choices, we hope they will never show up on our video surveillance monitors as intruders or thieves. That, in turn, makes our communities stronger and safer for everyone.
